The cement pot looks great. I hope to put the finishing touches on this weekend. I still need to use a little morter or fine grade cement to clean up some of the small gaps, and then use a little cement stain to really make it look great. It doesn't look big in the pictures, but it is a foot and a half tall and weighs well over 170 pounds. You can also see the before and after of the mold. apparently i spent way too much time making the mold nice and pretty because it was nearly destroyed it the process.
I had a great weekend with my little sister. I had a chance to see her new place and meet her new roomates. we did a lot of stuff in the short time we were there. had coffee, flew a kite, walked around the park, got a cool vitage shirt, listened to a bit of live music(I really liked their concert area, but was disapointed to hear country tunes)... the only down side to the whole weekend is that I lost my eye piece for my camera. that little guy just won't stay on.
the house is slowly coming along. I'm really excited about my yard! the dead grass is being overtaken by the new stuff. my new city of austin rain barrel is full and ready for some dry spells. the bushes and plants are trimmed and under control. I can't wait until jacob finishes up my landscaping design. that's when the house will really start to take shape. being a home owner is such a blast. its hard work, but very rewarding.
on another related note, my cement pot construction has been a learning experience. I grossly under estimated how much cement I was going to need for the project. I thought a 60# bag would be plenty... I actually took 170#s of dry cement... wow!! obviously, it is an extremely heavy outdoor pot. I don't think ill be moving it much... but, for the most part it has been a success. my last obsticle is getting the inner part of the mold out of the pot... so far my attempts have failed. ill keep you posted and add some photos when its complete.
The main water line to the office where I work was busted this morning and everyone was sent home. it could not have been a better day for it to happen. its beautiful. I mowed, pour my cement mold, trimed the bushes, mulched the lawn, water sealed the deck, recovered a website, and headed down to the greenbelt to hang out in the creek. that's where I am now... siting in the middle of some rapids on barton creek, writing a pleo blog on my treo, and enjoying God's creation! Have I told you how much I love austin!! technology and nature living together as one... that's all for now, time to chill :-)
Six Odd things about me:
1. I can't stand any bodily noises including chewing, so I'm very uncomfortable at a quiet dinner table. I have to have some sort of music or noise to distract me.
2. My first computer was purchased with money raised from auctioning off my Reserved Grand Champion chickens at the county fair. I even won one of those cheesy belt buckles that I would never be caught dead in.
3. I love doing physical labor of any sort, including cleaning, yard work, house projects, fixing things. I think this is because I use my mind so much at work.
4. I can't function unless my house is in order. a little dust and a little untidiness is acceptable, but things need to be in their places.
5. I'm married to an odd ball, does that count? :-)
6. I use both sides of my brain fairly well. I love anything to do with engineering, mechanics, electronics, math, and science ..., but yet still love to draw, photograph, design, paint, and wear stylish clothes
7. bonus... i can't stand to watch any kind of sports, but i do like to play them. (but i don't have anything against people who do like to watch them)
so I have been trying to learn action scripting for years without much success. I just haven't been able to wrap my mind around the whole concept. I have a site that I am working on and thought I had several months to figure it out. but good old mr reeves promised the client that I would have it figured out by thursday. yipes, I hate being that stressed, but apparently I do really well under pressure, because I almost have it complete. and now actionscript doesn't scare me so much.
so at work we have this massive system for all of our company documents. we recently found out that our database is corrupted and all the japanese document were stored wrong. opentext, a major corporation the size of microsoft worked on the data issue for 6 weeks and gave up. SOO... I got to have some very nerdy fun and was searching for bit level relationships. (for those non nerd, that's the 1s and 0s that make up all computer data) the really cool thing is, it took me two days to come up with a solution. opentext was surprised and my boss was super impressed and I had a blast decrypting data! I love being a nerd!
just chillin here by jos coffee listening to some awesome music. Two really great bands have played so far. Octopus Project and Sound Team. I made an attempt to go to the auditorium shores show and they wouldn't let me in with my camera. apparently now if you have a half decent camera you have to buy a press pass to take pictures. what a jip!!! ohh well, the music at jos has been fantastic. the next band is about to start.
so a friend at work has been trying to talk me into participating in the 5x7 art exhibition at the art house. so the deal is, local artist submit 3 5x7s with anything they want and they are auctioned off for charity.
Ive been working on some ideas, and my best one so far is spray painting graphics onto photographs and probably letting the paint run a little to emphasize the mixed mediums. Something like this...
What do you think?
so i work for a japanese company called tokyo electron as a programmer. because of my love for design, and all things artistic i love to hang out with the marketing group and help out with projects occasionally. a couple of weeks ago, the marketing department tried to hire me within as the graphics designer for the entire US region. wow, it was such a huge decision to make. i really wanted to be the cool designer who flies to japan to take corporate photos and design booth graphics, but i also was really getting into the whole java development and making great strides in my programming skills. i finally decided to stay with the programming for a couple more years and continue to satisfy my design needs with side projects. Then Yesterday... I found out that our IS department needs me so bad that they probably weren't going to let me transfer anyway. wow, all that stress for nothing. but it sure is cool that two departments that utilize opposite sides of the brain both have such a great interest in me!!
